Why is cooling your CPU so important?
When a CPU is not cooled by a fan or heat sink, it will simply overheat and eventually fry. This can cause irreparable damage and even death to your computer! To make sure this doesn’t happen, we’ve got some tips for you below!
Coolers are important because they keep your processor cool, so it stays stable. Proper cooling will extend the life of your processor, saving time for repairs later.
Cooling also reduces wear and tear, as no excessive amount of energy is released from the device during operation. We also recommend that you ALWAYS post something thermal paste on your CPU because it will help a lot to keep it cool.
Cooling is especially important with overclocking, as this is a common practice. Overclocking can be risky because you go against the manufacturer’s recommendations and generally don’t know what might happen to your CPU when overclocking, so always make sure you have a comprehensive understanding of how it affects your device’s lifespan if not doing you right or having proper cooling. Good cooling helps to keep the processor stable during and after overclocking, for this it is recommended to use a good cooler or even water cooling.
That said, now let’s get to the main question.
Do CPUs come with coolers?
Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. Usually, when you buy a new processor from your favorite brand or store, it has a stock cooler that is barely good enough to run your CPU at safe temperatures without any problems. This means that if you’re looking for something more powerful, such as an aftermarket cooling solution and/or overclocking capabilities, you may need to purchase it separately.
The common type of heatsink used by most processors is easy to find on Amazon as there is no shortage of variety, even though some brands may not sell them directly themselves (example: Intel will not supply its own heatsink if your processor is unlocked ). For those who want water cooling solutions, these are also available, but I would only recommend these if you have the extra cash to spend.
AMD Ryzen processors come with a pretty good stock of fans that will keep your processor cool even with mild overclocking, if you’re going for more extreme overclocking you should upgrade the fans or even consider water cooling.
Intel processors come with a decent stock cooler IF they are not the unlocked versions. The unlocked CPU models (named ‘k‘ at the end of the model like I5 11600k) doesn’t come with a stock cooler, meaning you’ll need to get one if you want to use your processor or it will overheat in no time.
What is water cooling?
Water cooling is an alternative to air cooling that has been around for decades. It replaces the regular heat sink and fan with a water block, radiator and pump. The main advantages of this are quietness (less noise) and more efficient heat transfer than traditional fans, which means lower processor temperatures at a given clock speed/voltage level.
The disadvantages include higher costs (compared to stock coolers) in addition to the need for occasional maintenance to prevent corrosion or other problems such as leaking radiators. Aside from those few drawbacks, most people find this type of cooling very effective – especially if you also install extra case fans!
Tip: I would only recommend water cooling if you play a lot on high settings, if you live in a very hot place or if your CPU is overclocked on very high settings.
Water cooling is an effective cooling method for high-end CPUs, especially if they are overclocked or used in gaming scenarios where the processor can run at higher loads for extended periods of time. Water blocks, radiators and fans cool more efficiently than air coolers. Therefore, it is not a good idea to use water cooling for processors running at a lower load.
